2. Resume Tips

Writing An Effective Resume
Reframing Your Skills

Many skills you have learned in the military are transferable to the private sector, but you must know how to “package” them in the terminology of your new career if you are going to develop sucessful resume. Take these steps:

1. Research your target career area for its required skills.
– Try to imagine how potential employers will respond to your background. Create a variety of phrases to use in your cover letter, resume and interview.

2. Make a list of the responsibilities you have had, especially over the last five years. Underneath each, write down the skills necessary to complete those tasks and then record the successes you achieved as they were completed.

3. Match the list of your skills with the list of skills needed for your desired career and include that information in your resume and cover letter.

4. Practice expressing how your military work experience has helped prepare you for your new career. Hearing yourself say these words with your own ears will help prepare you for interviews. The words will be familiar to you and you won’t feel awkward.

Hello world!

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
